The Company That Started It All
Prior to 1974, Jack Herra (original owner and co-founder) worked for a small plumbing shop by the name of H&L Altepeter in Lily Lake, Illinois. He greatly appreciated working for this locally based, family-owned business and sought to make a livelihood by the trade. In addition to enjoying this line work, Jack was also fond of bringing aid and comfort to the residents of his local community. So in 1974, when H&L Altepeter offered to sell Jack the company, he saw it as an offer he could not refuse. Jack approached his brother, Richard Herra, and asked if he would like to join him in this business venture. Together, they established J&R Herra’s shop in Elburn, Illinois. From the very beginning, they instituted a corporate mission centered on customer care and trusted workmanship that was honest and affordable.
We Grew Along with Kane County
Jack and Rich were in business together for over 30 years. In the beginning the company was small; only 3 employees sustained the business. They decided to incorporate in 1979, and began to grow in size, services, and inventory. They welcomed more technicians and full-stocked service vehicles onto the team to meet the growing needs of the ever-expanding Kane County.Throughout the years, Jack’s immediate family has continued to work earnestly for the success of this local company. Jack’s wife (Jan) and his children (Steve, Patty, Alan, and Brian) have all helped to make J&R Herra Home Services what it is today. In 2011, Brian (Jack’s youngest son) purchased the family business. Along with his wife and children, he manages the day to day operations of the company and is proud to serve as president and owner of this Kane County business.
